About

‘Stories about Hope’ is created and produced by Renee Dixson, curated by Amber Hearn, and has an associated book.

‘Stories about Hope’ explores the human dignity, identity and strength in people from refugee backgrounds through photography and short films. This exhibition celebrates the courage and resilience of people who have undertaken diverse journeys to Australia throughout different points in history, and through their stories, prove that your past does not define you and can give you strength to move forward with confidence.

Renee does this through her sensitive and connected, social documentary style, multimedia approach to artmaking which allows the viewer to delve deeper into an understanding of the resilience and hope that lies within her subjects.

Each person’s story is told through photographs and a short documentary film. Project participants who share their stories come from varying countries, having undertaken different journeys to Australia during different points in history. Stories range from the Holocaust survivors to queer refugees and the most recent, young arrivals.

  • Some of them are only just embarking on their career path.
  • Some of them have become internationally recognised professionals in their fields.
  • And some of them have been awarded the Order of Australia Medal for their contributions to the community.

Their stories are inspirational and full of hope. Each of them in their own way prove that your past does not define you, but can give you more strength to move forward with confidence.

‘Stories about Hope’ has been financially supported by the City of Sydney Council, the Inner West Council, and through the support of 30 individuals who donated toward the crowd-funding campaign.

In order to make a long-lasting impact of the project, profit from book sales are donated to local NGOs that are working with people seeking safety. Make a difference today by getting your copy of the Stories about Hope Book.

The first exhibition was launched in December in Erskineville Town Hall, Sydney. Up to date, Stories about Hope has been shown in Sydney, Regional NSW and Victoria. For future shows please click here.
